Its nationalism, not racism. They did not offend another person or a race because of racial attributes. Chinese is no race, China is a nation. They waved a chinese flag as a sign of national pride. They thought they represented china at a competitive event. Has nothing to do with racism, and on the international it is maybe questionable, cause there are no nations competing, like in the worldcup, but teams. Some teams are multinational.

I can be proud of my university degree. I can lose or gain weight. Sure the lottery of nature plays a role in every aspect of life. Smarter people get degrees easier. If my metabolism is fast, I do not get fat.
But my nationality i am born with, same goes for my race or gender, is nothing I have put any effort into.

I am not proud of things I had to put 0 effort in. I am proud of what I earned. I may be lucky or happy to live in germany (good economy, healthcaresystem, human rights), but not proud. Not every positive feeling has the same name.

It once WAS, to overcome other forms of social structures like aristocracy. Today nationalism is the next burden we have to overcome. Take the european union for example. Everyone would benefit more of it, if it was a national state (as a small step to a world government). Yet people refuse, cause of national borders. Same thing for aristocrats 300 years ago, who did not want to give away their power, for a greater purpose.
