it isn't that you need to know game mechanics, it is that you need a team that does and a team that knows what to do with them.
the fall of popularity of kunkka and mirana, and the shift of meta towards cores being relatively less important made this hero less attractive.

Unpopular heroes in a nutshell.
disruption = good tool to let an enemy hero escape or help an ally one die faster
soul catcher = hard as fuck to land with little reward
shadow poison = takes so long to deal damage you can only use it to scout rosh pit and be worse than kotl at defending
demonic purge = a super pathetic slow that's an ulti
Coz sd need a very good coordination with ur team or ur sd becomes the friend of ur enemy team (i once used distruption on my enemy when tide ravages)
If ever there was a hero in need of a remake it is shadow demon. His whole skill is just so useless.
Shadow Demon can actually be really annoying to play against, if people know what they're doing. If you're playing Omni you'll have hard time against competent SDs.

Why isn't this hero played more? I feel like he can be valuable to team fights and turn a fight around, it suprised me he has a 43% winrate and is 105th popularity, people must think he sucks or dont play him right. He does require you to know game mechanics and what you can do with his abilitys. Hes decent against every melee carry due to demonic purge and disruption but hates illusions. So maybe you guys should play him more!
