I have won 292/464 solo ranked games in the last 9 months since I replaced my old PC for a 62.9% winrate. I did this mostly by picking heroes I know and had played a lot before - heroes that I know I can use to win. If I had kept strictly to that plan I'm sure I would have gained MMR faster, but I still like to random heroes sometimes or pick something to try it out as a counter or combo with something else.
Which heroes gained the most MMR?
Luna won 50/75 66.7% winrate, gained 625 MMR
Lich won 9/9 100% winrate, gained 225 MMR
Zues won 16/22 games 72.7% winrate, gained 200 MMR
Undying won 12/20 games 60% winrate, gained 100 MMR
Venomancer won 14/25 56% winrate, gained 75 MMR
Dazzle won 17/31 games 54.8% winrate, gained 75 MMR
Vengeful Spirit won 27/51 games 52.9% winrate, gained 75 MMR
Silencer won 14/26 games 53.8% winrate, gained 50 MMR
Total gained 1425 MMR from these heroes.
Other heroes lost a total of 175 MMR during this same period in solo ranked games.
You can see that gaining MMR is slow

Gaining MMR was hard for almost all of my heroes. Only a few of the very best heroes could move up quickly. For me that was my top carry (Luna) my top mid hero (Zues) and my top support hero (Lich). These three were nearly auto-win when I was 1k MMR below a reasonable rating for me.
Your best heroes may or may not have anything to do with the meta game. They are just the heroes you know how to play well. If you want to boost MMR. Pick your best heroes. Pick them every game.
