Hey everyone, I’ve been playing Dota 2 for a while now, tried it back in 2012, but so far only played 600 matches. I don’t play that much but I enjoy playing one game sort of like relaxing after a hard day.

My wife's brother got me into the game, he used to play dota 1 too he is 17 now, so he showed me some of the stuff I know.

I know I am not that good at the game, but I want to keep playing it because I enjoy it.
I watch lots of guides and stuff, but whenever I play with my wife's brother he keeps telling me how I suck lol, which I know without him.
When I buy items he always tells me I bought the wrong stuff, so my question is how do I learn what should be bought in what situations against certain heroes? Because for me this is the only thing I can't figure out, and what stacks with what and dose not.

Because I know all the other mistakes I make and how I can fix them, and the items dilemma is the only one I can't figure

Is that the guy? If yes then don't worry about him saying that you suck, because he sucks too
(and I suck as well so my 4k opinion might not mean that much here)

Buying the right items is a lot about experience. You have to understand what is your job in the match and build accordingly
I think that sticking to some ingame guides will work the best for you

Try to look on item list several times, learn what items there are. As I remember from my early games of Dota, I didn't even know about existence of some items or what can they do

Get to the bottom of why you don't know what to buy - you need to learn what heroes can do with their abilities, and accommodate your item build every time. For example, it's not completely uncommon to build basher on strength carries, sometimes it'll just happen to be a good choice, especially once updated to abyssal, it's just not the part of most suggested builds. If you need to fight lifestealer as a strength carry, obviously you will not build heart as that will just feed him more, but it's likely you might want to build that basher if you have to manfight him, so he has no sustain in fight since he's getting bashed all the time. But only if you also build attack speed... You see where that's going. Every game's going to be specific and you'll have to analyze what you have, what they have and what you lack, and improve upon on it.

Play different heroes in different roles, realize what all the items do, how much they cost, what things they offer and how much they improve your hero in certain conditions, and understand what they synergise with and why.

Really it comes down to simple experience and knowledge of the game. Play more and vary what you play.
