I have seen some Antimages going phaseboots, vanguard, vlads, for early action. maxing spellshield with vang makes you pretty tanky. but honestly:
This is crap. Anitmage strength is his mobitly and flashfarm. Not extending it means failing it.
in organized teams you can change it up to help your team sooner. This does not work in pubs

If you dont want to go battlefury, the way to go:
PT>VANGUARD>VLADS>MANTA>TANGO
I don't see why though. No matter how hard my lane is or anything I seem to find the farm when playing antimage to get an ok Battlefury, 15-18min. (At wost, usually 11-12 if good lane)
My personal fastest is 8, but don't know if it counts as enemy timber fed me. (Not intentionally doe.)
Still need battlefury for split pushing anyway,
If you are far behind, not having battlefury will only drag your team behind in my opinion
If you really don't like battlefury build then build maelstorm->vlads->mjolnir->heart->basher

But its the way to go if you're not going battlefury I assume. Could surely do some tricky stuff with drums, sny and bkb too.
I mean, its not optimal but I suppose it works sometimes.
Battlemage can be pretty strong, though it is suboptimal compared to BF AM if you can pull it off. AM has low lifepoints, so to go in like a maniac early, the only thing you need is HP. He actually does some pretty good damage.
-skills. Get 1-1-1 then stats (ult of course too). The stats help with hp. Only max out q when you are ready to get manta. At some "reasonable" time, start maxing out your blink. It's probably best to have maxed blink by the time your vlads is online since you can still farm pretty fast with just that item.
Items:
starting: tango, stout, axe
Early pick ups: ring of health, boots
Early finishes: phase boots, vanguard, vlads
Other items: manta style, heart, butterfly, abyssal, etc. (just regular AM items except without a BF). Definitely get manta first though. The illusions are way too powerful with his mana burn not to get.
EE used to get Armlet on AM before it was cool. But really, it's actually pretty strong and helps with his terrible HP.
The only viable build for am is rushed bf. That's actually part of the reason this hero is so bad in the current meta.

I was wondering, if you are behind / not getting free farm on anti mage, skipping battle fury is a given, but should you go straight manta, or is it better / safer to get something in between? (vlads or vanguard)
normally if I have a bad lane I get vlads + treads and try to split push continuously, to buy time until I get manta style. is there anything else I can do or should be doing, such as item or playstyle wise?
