It does damage to anything it touches, whether its active or returning, I don't see what the problem is
That's a misconception, each spirit is a unit with fixed damage and a BAT of 1, which needs to return to the hero between hits. Once the ultimate duration ends they will no longer attack and fly back to DP healing based on how much damage each individual unit dealt. "Kieffus" please stop spreading misinformation.
