I have a few friends who told me either them or their friends have ranked up even though all in all they lost more games then they won is it true that you can get higher medal/star just by playing very well even if u lose a lot

Since the ranking system only counts win/loss for MMR, and gives jackshit about performance, the answer is no.
Though ideally, with good performance comes a better winrate, even if that's not always the case.

you dont play well if you lose games

Yeah... losing generally = play8ng poorly there are outliers.. But still

47.80% win rate, on average you lose 1.1 MMR per game. So how can you increase your rank?

PS: even though it would be possible to win like 10 games in a row to upgrade your medal and then lose 11 in a row. So technically you would rank up with a below 50% win rate.

You don't lose medals, so technically they could get a very big streak of wins and gain medals while their overall win % is low. It requires a very high recent win % though.

i have an overall winrate of like 51% winrate in party this month (5-stack only) and lost about 600 MMR, the reverse is possible as well (49% winrate, +600)
