back then people picked heroes based on their models thats why rex, doom, pitlord and bloodseeker were very popular. i dont remember spectre or pugna being popular at all, but you were very likely to see riki, gondar, clinkz every game, along with mortred, leoric, nessaj, sniper and most carries. almost no one picked any int heroes besides zeus and maybe silencer and od.
Mortred was mostly picked. She's overpowered that time cuz the hero is just purely invisible (blur ability), only her shadow can be seen. You need to actually turn on the shadow option in WC3 to be able to see the hero (but you could see her HP bar though).
also you could see the auras she has, but her hitbox didnt change so unless you were retarded it was the same thing. but some heroes had really weird hitboxes, especially gondar. it was legit hard to click on the hero sometimes.
Lion mid. The good old days. I still bring it back here and there, when i'm 5 man with my batchmates who DGAF abt party MMR.
I remember a patch specifically addressed heroes with stupid hitboxes like gondar. Also people buying Aghanim's just because it made their hero look cooler and Battlefury on heroes like Shaker and Tide because it changed their attack animation.
Also, good old days when you could freely share your items, which of course meant having someone pick Kotl and farm items for the right clicker.
Used to play WD mid. Good old times. Tried it Once, worked well (owned SF completely). People dont know how to play against these agresive Heroes anymore on mid.
All people buy lothar and buriza because there is no tanky meta back in dota 1 unless it buys taras... so surprise attack with lotar buriza is very good.. and no one buy 200 gold sentry and dust is not yet introduced early patch

i used to play vs a guy who spammed wd mid when i was 3k and he stomped amost every game if u got hit by cask near a creep ure a corpse

All thse heroes were everyday in match fucking everyday now they are just a smart counter picks or if some1 spam one of these heroes
I ididnt notice and i dont belive ppl then picked counters or knew how to pick best hero for that game mostly ppl would insta pick and only few would wait and think
