a lot of the time it's better to pick a hero that's moderately countered but you're really comfortable with, than something that counters the whole enemy team but you barely play it

In 3k support picks are usually the last picks since everyone instalocks cores, so you can win if you counterpick their cores by your support pick, and then build accordingly. However, it is still more likely that you win if you pick a core that is good and you can play, because this means that you are not creating space and farm for a core that might not do anything (like pick jugg and build desolator, then ping enemies every time he dies because he has 800 HP).
