first check it on speedtest.net, could just be unstable net
then check if your pc is lagging or downloading something (steam too/games)
connection lags when your pc is stuck too or you're using too many videos/images
something could also be interfering or your router is shit. Just buy a cable extension and use that instead (can fix it to the wall all the way to wherever you like to play)
other than that, wait for an expert to reply xD
You say you're on Wifi so they the most likely cause. Try connecting to your router directly with a cable or otherwise move your laptop/PC right next to the router. Your issues sound like the ones I had a few years ago and my problems were because of interference in the wifi.
yes might be wifi indeed. and i suspect a shit router. it cant be lag because like i said i have high speed internet. and i dont have anything open when i play. this is some weird shit.
Lots of things can actually interfere with Wifi signals leading to packet loss and high ping. Microwaves, cellphones, your neighbour's wifi, etc can all mess with your signal. A hard line is the only way to reliably get good internet.
Might be a crappy or faulty router but that's less likely in my opinion
back to my original question though. how do i diagnose this? i never really had this packet loss problem. could it also be valve servers?
^Server might have some problem, this is supposed to be peak time and I couldn't find a match at all on basically the most populated bracket
Okay I don't like you bro but I'll tell you how to diagnose this crap since I'm a network engineer by trade. And your problem is very simple. It's either your router or there a a problem with your ISP and you will have to call them to troubleshoot the old cables you have on your house. Anyhow as people said hardline your laptop into your modem. Screw the router(sometimes the Ethernet ports don't work properly too) and see if you notice the same packet loss. If not then go buy new Asus router and your done. If you still have packet loss then call ypur ISP and setup a call since there could be a variety of issues with your connection.
By the way from experience I can tell you most routers last between 1-2 years in heavy use.
@Iilium
Not true bro, yes LAN is best but wifi gaming is perfectly fine, if you buy the right hardware. I get 180Mbps, 16ms and 0 packetloss over wifi which is MORE than perfect.
thx stanceworks. you know i was just fukn wit ya right.
what ASUS router would u recommend? i get a good signal although the router is pretty far away. its been good enough for years but maybe its time to change it.

i have high speed internet, on my laptop on wifi. getting packet loss 2k ping at unpredictable timings in game. one sec its fine, then suddenly lag spikes. restarting steam helps. but then it starts again, and then goes away randomly.
how do i diagnose the problem?
