Ok, so, first post an' all that...

I'm currently battling that thing that happens to most, life. Work, little kid, grown up stuff y'know? Meanwhile, trying to crowbar a bit of Dota into it.

I almost always play with a friend or two in un-ranked, and try to avoid ranked, as they were in Austrailia at the time. I would generally play support with 400ms, so if we played 'seriously' it killed the fun a bit as I didn't feel as useful as I should have been.

My friend is now in EU and we play with a couple Americans from time to time. So since then we wanted to track progress and play ranked. My unranked hidden MMR is noticably better than my ranked MMR due to the amount of games played, however recently I feel I am stagnating and not really improving. I have a good understanding and knowledge of the game and its mechanics, so here is the standard line... I think I'm better than where my MMR says I am! Im not saying I'm 4k or anything, just the quality of players in my games can get hilariously bad. I'm totally humble enough to know that I need to improve andmy rank is prob ably a reflection of my ability. So say 'git gud' if you like, but I'm just looking for more constructive responses.

I was wondering what you guys consciously do to improve?

I know about watching replays of yourself is good, but then wedging that into my life, spending an hour or so, is not as important to me as playing a game for example. I thought about uploading my games to youtube to watch back at work in the background (I can get away with it a little bit).

Are the hero's I play not impactful enough?

I tend to pick a support if it looks like my team are going full retard carry heavy, should i bother trying to assist, or just pick the flavour of the month?

Play with a different group? (my friends all sit higher than me already and get to play more often than me)

Just go back to unranked AP and stop worrying about ranked?!

Anything ingame that you guys regularly focus on?

Yes i've had a terrible run recently, and my KDA is weak, but that is usually the heros I play combined with being the fall guy. I like the setup heros, play makers and initiators, so pos 4 tends to be my role.

TLDR: How 2 git gud, srsly

I've been around long enough to know that NO FUN IS ALLOWED! xD
It does look a bit desperate now i read back... hey-ho
Yeah I do watch them, I enjoy, I envy, I sob!

Meh, no fun, I dont want to drill MMR via spamming. also, i really can't play NP to standard... haha

solo ranked > party ranked -> unranked in terms of learning stuff.

watch 3-4 of your recent replays and try to find moments when you were not efficient, when u were generally doing wrong things or afking instead of farming or whatever. u need to figure out why and when u do this kind of mistakes and get rid of them. it will take some time, but it will give u a lot.

watch streams of players who are doing their best and not just fooling around.

            try to pick new heroes.

stay positive and do not give up even when u have no chance to win, u still can learn smthng if u keep playing.

be versatile in item choices even if at this exact game it migt turn out to be suboptimal; it will still grant you with a better understanding of the game.

Thanks guys, yeah I mean I feel I have an open mind I like to try random things with heros like items and positions, I do mix up my heros quite often (besides the huge run of WD games I played when I was learning the basics).
I tend to stay more chill than my mates as I don't play as often, so never give up early.

I like what you say about the replays, i guess they really are the thing I need to do if I want to pinpoint bad habits.

Solo ranked is quite interesting, but for me right now its like 2.5k which is just god awful, no couriers or warding and dreadful hero picks etc. i've read lots about supporting in these games can win it, but when the standard of player cannot last hit a full wave and feeds (probably on purpose) as Huskar, it becomes very draining. MMR goes up, MMR comes down. No sense of improvement.

If i get a bit of free time, I try to employ a best of three, so If i won two, just stop there same with losses. As we know thats easier said than done, when you got the addiciton xD

if you play better than enemy teams support, ur mmr should be going up consistently. if it doesnt, it only means that u r actually not better than everyone else in this bracket.
your performance is the only factor that affects the trend of your rating.

Of course, I'm not trying to say it's anyone other than myself, and I need to improve to get out of it, some games can just be out of your control. I guess that happens at any MMR though. Drinking, smoking, account buyers etc...

I'll compare and challenge myself to my direct opposite ingame (if there is a clear comparision).

It's all kinda obvious stuff, just sometimes good to hear from others.

                  M u r d e r

2 cents... If you want higher mmr, play unranked first. once you play some unranked and get better, play party ranked with people who are of higher mmr than you currently are, and try to perform really well. In example, I had like ~2.5k ranked TBD party mmr at one point, then played ranked with some 3k friends (http://www.dotabuff.com/matches/2528531157 ) , next unranked match into HS even though I and my friends were pretty much all NS player.

TLDR: if you want to not get stuck into NS, play unranked until you establish your approximate hidden mmr where you want it to be (for some 3k, for some 4k and shit), then play party ranked with higher mmr friends (assuming you will perform good), repeat.... when you get to the point whre you are confident you want your solo mmr to be, calibrate there.

i feel liek this is least grindy method of climbing the mmr. totes better than calibrating at lvl 20 and grind your way up.
coming from someone who climbed like 2000 or more mmr in less than a month

Thanks, however this is exactly what I've done and currently do.

My unranked mmr (used to) sometimes get me to High Skill games, and I can tell its around the 3.1k mark with nearly 2k games played.
My ranked mmr sits solo around 2.5k. party at 2.7-2.8k at around 200 games played.
My friends all play at +3k and around 3.6k is the highest I play with.

I guess its due to the 10x amount of games played in unranked thats calibrated me better over a wider span of time.

We just released an updated hero and facet statistics page featuring more data and advanced filters. Oh, and it supports Turbo!
