[serious]If a one-legged person is moving in a straight line with moderate speed can you say they are walking? in General Discussion

    Or you should say hopping?

I assume they aren't (I really hate how english doesn't have a neutral third person pronoun, this is retarded) using crutches?

my first girlfriend was actually a one legged person. Really cool person. I didn't know at first lol(she had a prosthesis), until we were just hanging out at her place and she comes out of the kitchen hopping and started to tickle me with her knee lol.

We were togheter for 2 years. Fucked with and without a leg, was quite fun now that i think about it. Damn i kinda miss her, she had to move places and the long distance thingy didn't work

          they

You might say one can run with one leg (depending on how you define it), but you can never say that one is walking with one leg. One who is walking is ALWAYS in contact with the ground.

they is used as gender neutral pretty often, including the cases when u refer to a single person

also "hop" would indeed sound offensive.
"walk" is fine, i dont agree with matrice.

he/ she is approaching.... is probably th ebest way to say such a statement

theyre not walking but theres no other polite way to put it except

"x is on his way / coming over here / making his way around the track"

@matrice a one-legged moonwalk would fulfil your criteria of 'walking'

This actually got me thinking. Walking associates with 2 legs in my mind for some reason and got into a debate with friend. Though, we didn't achieve consensus.
Anyway, it probably is impolite to say someone is hopping instead of walking, but is it technically/grammatically correct?
Or is it one of those things with no definitive answer.

he'd be hopping because he has to jump, walking can be done without bending your knees

I know about the "they" part. My comment between parentheses is located where it is precisely for that reason.

Ok, on topic, let's look at a dictionary.

                                    http://www.dictionary.com/browse/walk
walk: to advance or travel on foot at a moderate speed or pace; proceed by steps; move by advancing the feet alternately so that there is always one foot on the ground in bipedal locomotion and two or more feet on the ground in quadrupedal locomotion.

Well, looks like being offensive is the gramatically correct asnwer...but of course, you are no machine to think like that, right?
