Hey guys, anyone around here who is using the steam os?
    Is it worth it?

Already went through the reviews on google and still not able to decide.

I already downloaded and tried it on a vm, it looks fine. But i cant play games on a vm.

If you just want a OS for gaming and mainly Valve games, get it but if you work with the PC then don't get it at all or set up a dual boot

well why would you use it if you already have windows? The only purpose really would be if you're making a new machine and don't want to get a windows license or use regular Linux. Steam really is only developing it for their steamboxes meant to replace consoles so they don't have to license another os.

well i wanted to move away from windows being my main os because of many reasons (virus, crashes, bsod etc)

so i was planning to put ubuntu or steamos as my main os (and dota is probably the only game i play) and then for other things like browsing the net, downloads, work etc i would use virtual box and install windows on it.

and does linux boot faster than windows? (this is really important when you are in the middle of a game and suddenly electricity goes out and comes back shortly) the 5 minutes is very little on windows when you have used it for a long time.

          what do you guys think?

Dude. Viruses, crashes and BSoDs are the usual consequence of user's incompetence. Are you sure, you want to transfer to Linux, if even administrating a Windows PC gives you so many problems?

On a side note - want to get faster boot - get yourself an SSD and install OS on it.

It might be just me but playing Dota2 on OpenGL is terrible. So many bugs. And moving from Windows to Linux you won't have DirectX

really??? according to other reviews, many says they had better experience with opengl rather than directx
and those reviews were from 2013-2014

Spend $50 and get a UPS so your computer does not turn off if the power goes out for a short period of time.

Linux can boot quickly, but it depends what services you have installed and running.

OpenGL IS better than DirectX, but the way Valve handles their Linux version of the game, it has quite a few issues afaik.
