On a losing streak? We’re giving away free coaching sessions with top players to spread some holiday cheer in General Discussion
jay@dotacoach.org

Last night we launched gift lessons ( https://dotacoach.org/gift ) on DotaCoach.org, just in time for the holidays. To celebrate we wanted to give away some free private 1:1 lessons with some of our top coaches to people who are on especially bad losing streaks.

I’m not sure what an anomalously bad losing streak looks like, but I just checked and my personal record is 13. So let’s say if you are on a 10+ game losing streak, post your dotabuff or some other form of proof here. We’ll probably give away 15 or so free lessons depending on the response. Winners will be decided based on a random combination of how long your streak is, how bad we feel for you, our current mood at the time of judgment -- let’s say roughly 24 hours from now.

I’ll also be following this thread in case you have questions about the site or anything. Our homepage ( https://dotacoach.org/ ) has a video explaining how the site works, and you can learn more about our coaches here: https://dotacoach.org/coach/about

how is that better price than db+ ? :D

        Miracle`-

price is worth it .. you get more detailed knowledge about the match you played via experienced players and not these db+bots which just says the basic sht

                  jay@dotacoach.org

Heh it's ok if you haven't seen the previous threads. I'm not a coach, I just built the site with a friend. Our coaches are muuuch better than me :)

                    Zahard

do u also have coaching for ppl with winning streaks to lose games?

Now there is something where I would feel confident in my coaching. Nice streak :)

                        MARLAN

can you just give me free coaching because im really bad and need it pls

                          streaks are just luck anyway.

                          Giff me Wingman

tbh there are so many coahing sites and people who do coach (6k+ streamers). Why would someone go ahead and choose your site?

I think it would be smarter if you would hand out some free lessons to people so they can basicially promote your site, so far i really cannot see why a player would be choosing your site over any other offer they can get.

                            jay@dotacoach.org

MARLAN: Sure, it all depends on how many people put in their name, what the submissions look like, and how many lessons we end up being able to afford giving away.

Blunt: I'm not sure what you mean about "any other offer they can get", but to answer your overall question: There are a variety of potential reasons why someone would use our site. They all go back to some of the problems we had when we were trying to find coaches for ourselves before building the site:
-Simplicity/immediacy: I'm not sure if you've gone through the process of hiring one of these coaches yourself, but it can take a while. You have to contact them, work out scheduling (many of the most well-known coaches have full schedules), and then wait until your scheduled lesson. With our site, you can get a great coach immediately, without having to contact anyone in advance or anything like that. The video on our homepage does a good job of explaining this, if you haven't checked it out already.
-Quality control: All of our coaches are vetted to ensure that they are actually good coaches. If any of them receive consistent bad reviews (reviews have been overwhelmingly positive so far, but hypothetically), they are no longer allowed to coach on the platform. We found other coaching sites to be hit-and-miss in this regard.
-Cost/money-back guarantee: With our site, you pay a relatively small amount ($10/hr), and if you're not happy in any way we will give you your money back. The top end coaches charge significantly more than we do. Some of them are terrific coaches who think deeply about Dota coaching and how to do it well (e.g. http://dota2gym.com/), and if you can afford their rates they are certainly worth it. We have up-and-coming coaches who may not be as well-known but we think are equally good, and are worth trying if you can't afford $30-50/hr or are just interested in trying a coach out. (As we grow we actually plan to support different charge rates for each coach, so that as a coach grows in popularity, review scores, etc., they can up their rates to match their value. But for now we're keeping everything to $10/hr to keep things simple and so we can learn more about what students are looking for etc.)

Hope that explains the value our site adds, but I'm happy to discuss more if anything is unclear. We also have a bunch of cool ideas in the pipeline that should make it an even more compelling choice.

                              Giff me Wingman

No i haven't ever had the problems hiring a coach, since i never needed one myself, but i talk to a lot of people who consider getting a coach, but so far i cannot see any problems finding a coach these days, they are everywhere tbh. I saw the video and that's when i'm very skeptical, you tell me that you have so many great coaches yet i don't see any proof. It is so easy to exploit the MMR system to get a high MMR that MMR alone doesn't tell me anything.

The only thing you seem to have going for you is the price. When i want to get a coach, i want to be sure he is not some high mmr jackass who tells people wrong things, it is not hard to impress a 2k or 3k player, which should be the majority of your people.

So far i just have to take your word for it, i don't have any real proof, that your coaching site is a quality site, however if i get to talk to people like Meepodota, devilish, purge, moonmeander and so on, i know exacly what i can get, those are all 6k+ players which i watch on a daily basis, so i know they know what they are talking about, rather than just a guy with a 6k acc who i don't know or have ever seen in my life.

That's why i would suggest you should do something like a christmas event or something where people can basicially win free coaching sessions or make some sort of publicity where people can see that you are the real deal and not some morons telling basic stuff to 2k people.

                                Just sayin.

                                jay@dotacoach.org

                                  >That's why i would suggest you should do something like a christmas event or something where people can basicially win free coaching sessions

That is exactly what we're doing in this thread :)

I do get your concerns though. We want to allow our coaches to publicize themselves and build their own brands. To that end, we'll be adding public profiles for coaches in the next few weeks, and then we have a few other ideas for longer-term ways to improve this.

                                  Soultrap

How exactly coaching works? Someone tells you what to do step by step and you just... do it?

                                    jay@dotacoach.org

Hey Soultrap, good question. It depends on what you're trying to get better at, so this is something you'll usually figure out in the first few minutes after meeting your coach. The most common scenarios are:
-Watch one of your replays together. This is great in many cases, for example if you've been trying to focus on one hero and aren't doing as well with it as you'd like. Your coach can watch one (or multiple if you're focusing for example only on the early game) replays with you, and point out areas where you could be doing things better. I've found this to be the most helpful type of lesson in my session.
-Live coaching. This is where you play a game and the coach gives you advice while you play. This works if you don't have a good replay handy, or if you're itching to play a live game, or if you want to put some skills you've been working on to the test. It's a bit trickier because you already spend a lot of your focus on the game, so good coaches have to know when to speak and how much info to give you at any time without overloading your concentration.
-Lobby play. This is great for example when you're just learning a hero. You can create a private lobby and 1v1 eachother, or play against bots with your coach on your team, and your coach can take you through a bunch of the skills you should be learning and the builds and general mindset you should be thinking of when playing the hero.
-Watching a highly-skilled player play. You can go into the live games section and filter the top games by the hero you're interested in, and then watch one of the top players in the world playing this hero while your coach explains to you what they're doing. (This also works with replays.)

There are other ways to do it, but those are probably the most common ones.

                                      Vertoxity

Hey. I'm sub 4k player, atm sitting at 3740. I'd like to take your free lesson, since I got some questions. :-)

For return, I'm willing to put your sitename in my nickname.

I'm kinda poor, so I can't afford any Dota lessons, so this would be great.

                                        Big Boost Big Boobs

who would pay for this shit

                                          Soultrap

Ok then I have two more questions:
                                            1) Can I become a coach?
                                            2) ^If yes, can I remotely uninstall my trainee's DOTA 2 client if I think that it must be done?

                                            Whatislove

Hi Jay, My longest streak is 17 losses so hopefully that can earn me some points (The depression was real). I'm a decent player and know quite alot about the game, I currently play between high and very high skill. My difficulty is that I struggle at VHS, like the level is just a step up and I'm not sure where I am going wrong and I would love an outsider to sit with me and see where I could improve. I don't want to blame team mates as I they are beyond my control so I would just love to look at my game and see where the areas are that I need to improve to make the step up.

If the session goes well I would be willing to purchase more. @21362845 I would, If you enjoy something and you want to improve what is wrong with purchasing assistance. If you have nothing reasonable to add to the topic, stf up please!

                                              jay@dotacoach.org

Soultrap: Yep, although we're fairly backlogged with coach applications at the moment. But if you're 5k+ MMR you can submit an app and we'll get to it eventually. You may not uninstall your student's DOTA 2 client; everyone starts somewhere :)

Coolstory/Shred: Thanks for submitting! I just credited both of your Steam accounts. You guys get to be the guinea pigs :) If you sign into our site through steam you'll see 1 hour of gift credit when you click on hire a coach. You can use it immediately. This is the first time using our new auto-gift tool, so let me know if you run into any problems.

For others who've submitted, I'll be sending out the remaining gift credits in the next few hours.

This thread is like watching an infomercial.

                                                                        jay@dotacoach.org

Allison: We have coaches at all ranges starting at ~4k, with most being in the low-to-mid 5k range and the top ones in the high 6k. We'd definitely be able to find you a coach (in your case you would be matched with someone who is 6k+), but it may take a while depending on when you come to the site and which coaches are online at that time. When you go to a hire page, we'll give you a traffic light (green/yellow/red) indicating how long your wait time would be; if it's not green try it again at a different time.

As far as the fact that you can't do it for ranked games, I'd recommend going over replays with your coach anyway, which you can do for ranked games. Usually that's the most useful/insightful way to spend your lesson, at least based on what we've seen so far.

Concede: I don't think Kael and I know eachother, but like he said I've posted here a few times before and answered the standard "is this a scam" questions a few times, so I'm guessing he's just responding to that. Appreciate it Kael :)

                                                                          Whatislove

Everything went good. Coach was a nice guy. Can speak english at good level, can understand me and can give you some nice advices.

I think site will get better with time.

                                                                              Cunnch

Hi Jay , Is there any chance I could get one of those gift cards please , I've been stuck at 3k mmr basically since mmr came out. I considered before looking into other coaching but no one has offered a trial run so I was not sure about how useful the coaching could be , would be really appreciate if I could try a 1 hour trial , would be quite excited to purchase other lessons after if the coaching helped me develop out of the 3k mmr. My 11 lose streak , doesn't look to bad to my now climbing and current 4 game lose streak.

Would be interested to ask the coach predominately about supporting ,and supporting mistakes because I often play a support position ( I enjoy it the most)

                                                                                Thanks

Had my Coaching session now with a guy from Greece (Alex... aka [-_-]). It was absolutely brilliant, after fumbling around for 5 minutes trying to get my skype to work we got into it. We chatted for a while in perfect english and we looked for a game of mine we could go over. We talked thoroughly about every aspect of the game and where I did well and what I could have done differently.

After game (was over 1 hour already) we proceeded to discuss Dota for another 45 minutes or so and I learnt so many things myself as an average player that I would never really have thought about. I was enlightened and the experience was all around just excellent. I played a game after only to find he was still watching and spoke in and after game via chat (so 3 hours, 2 extra because he wanted to help). I will definitely be using the service again. Thank you so much Jay and [-_-], I hope the site continues to grow. Would highly recommend!
